Etosha National Park is in Namibia, a west African country lying on the Atlantic coast to the north of South Africa. Etosha lies in Namibia's north east corner within the country's great desert pan, an area of 9216 square kilometres.

Approximately 128 kilometres long by 72 kilometres wide, the great desert pan is dry and dusty for most of the year. But like an oasis, Etosha National Park is a refuge for the many animals attracted there by its watering holes.

Arguably Namibia's finest national park, the dry season sees the greatest density of wildlife in the reserve. By November when the rains arrive, the herds spread out over the park's entire range where abundant water can be found. Gradually the pans dry up again, and the animals return to their familiar watering holes. The best months to see wildlife at Etosha National Park are, without a doubt, August and September when animal numbers and density are at their peak.
