      Hey, you have a memory which does not go far enough back in time, When the Spanish held the south west portion of the USA, they established many settlements in what is now Texas, New Mexico, Arizonia and especially California. Many were at existing Native Americans established communities. This was in the 1500's, so a little assistance for actual dates & cities! Even the Russians when they controlled northern California had settlements still inhabited today! Inhabited by Califorians today.
