Wound healing takes place in three phases the first phase which is the inflammation stage involves first of all constriction of the blood vessels followed by platelet transportation at the site of the wound which effectively stop the flow of blood outside the body in case of small wounds.

White blood cells engulf the site and deal with any bacteria that may be present on the surface of the wound along with various proteins that commence the next step which is the actual healing of the wound.

Fibroblasts, cells that synthesize collagen the basic building block of new skin and tissue, assemble at the site ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is a major constituent of collagen and slow healing of wounds may indicate lack of vitamin C, another cause of slow wound healing could be an increase in the glucose content in the blood.

The last stage of the wound healing process involves the restructuring of the skin and tissue and is the slowest in nature the surrounding skin thickens and stretches to cover the partially formed tissue at the site of the wound from all sides.
