What Is Gibraltar?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Gibraltar is a British Colony in the far south of Spain. It is inhabited by Gibraltarians who have roots in Malta and Spain. Gibraltar borders Spain and so you need to pass through customs to get into the country.

Gibraltar has many contentious issues with Spain as Spain want to reclaim the country as their own, whereas Gibraltar is determined to stay British. There is a history of conflict, and the relationship between the two countries is not solid.

Both English and Spanish are spoken in Gibraltar, though Gibraltarians have fused the two languages to create their own version and so most Gibraltarians do not speak Spanish fluently.

Gibraltar has very little crime as it is such a small place. It is popular with cruise ships as it sells tax free tobacco, alcohol and perfume. Many British people live in Gibraltar as it is English speaking and has lots of similarities to England, with the benefit of Southern Spanish weather.
