  • What is a DBMS?
DBMS stands for Database Management System and is used in computing to create and manage database systems. Databases are often used in businesses as a way of controlling and recording information in a system that it easy to access understand and read and also develop tables and graphs from the information in the database. Databases simplify the process of collecting, organizing and processing information which even small businesses will find useful.
Database Management Systems have been used since computers were used in many businesses in the 60s. The first databases were extremely simplistic in comparison to the amazingly complex systems that are in place today but they had the same underlying framework and became the basis the high powered operations necessary today.
  • DBMS main characteristics
There are many characteristics of a DBMS. Primarily, a DBMS reveals extremely complex relationships between certain pieces of data. Many DBMSs will also be able to place that data in a way that reveals patterns that would be difficult or impossible to spot using the human eye or would take days or even years of analysis for a human to spot.
One of the advantages of using a DBMS is that it reduces the risk of human error and can even be programmed so that human error is virtually impossible if some interaction between the DBMS and humans are necessary.
A DBMS can automatically back up work so that is can never be lost, corrupted or destroyed. This is a particularly useful feature for businesses that are storing extremely important data within the database that can have massive effects on the rest of the company. A DBMS can also be programmed so that files can either be easily shared if this is an option that is wanted or the opposite could be done and extreme security settings could be applied to the database so that no one else could ever gain access.
