But the question was "AMERICA", not the inhabitation of Native Peoples. These Native People actually had no concept of land ownership. This was a European concept.
Okay, that is a good point. But what about Leif Eriksson then?
They both did but Columbus claimed it for Spain.
Vespucci was the first though, that's why we call it AMERICA and SOUTH AMERICA has COLUMBIA, and we have the District of Columbia. Google Columbus and see where he actually landed.

Hey what about Leif Eriksson in 1005 or so? I mean sure, Columbus sailed the ocean blue in the year 1492 has a nice ring to it...But I still maintain that it was populated and thus already "discovered prior to that.
Celtigirl is right in her facts, but Columbus staked out the Continent for Spain. There is no written proof that Ericksson or Vespuccib made any territorial claims. At least not as far as I can locate. I'm sure that SOMEONE will prove me wrong. LOL
There is a lot of evidence to suggest that the ancient Chinese discovered The Americas about a century before Columbus. Massive superfleets of as many as 10000 ships set off and circumnavigated the globe. Have you ever thought that many of the indigenous peoples in The Americas have an oriental look about them? Shipwrecks off the west coast of The Americas from California down as far south as Chile have proven to be of Chinese origin (there was one found under the ice in Antarctica!) Also as these ships would find new lands they would colonise, leaving men women and livestock. In some of the Peruvian and Chilean Indian dialects the words for rice, water and chicken are almost identical to the Chinese words. DNA samples of Native Americans are more similar to Chinese than any other race. It is believed that the Chinese had sailed around the world centuries before the Europeans who have been credited as "the first" it is thought that Mao Tse Tung destroyed all the records of these voyages so it is now a matter of opinion. I recommend a book called "1452- The Year China Discovered America" sorry can't recall the name of the author, I read it and it is packed with amazing theories evidence etc.

Actually if you research Eastern "Russia" and it's connection to the Native Alaskan's among other Native American tribes, you will find that a lot of the Eastern "Russian's" migrated into the Alaska Territory, not to mention the amazing similarities in the "look" of the Eastern "Russian's" and Native Alaskan's. I don't know much about who was in this country first as far as peoples from other countries, but history dictates that Native American's were already here when those ships landed.
Amerigo Vespucci was a map maker. That's it. He made the first maps of the new world for the people back home in Europe. He signed all his maps "Amerigo"
Unfortunately, those in power in Europe were idiots and when they saw the map with the name Amerigo on it, they assumed that this was the name of the land depicted, so hense it was called Amerigo, which was cleaned up to America...History is full of mistakes by idiots thinking that they knew the answers just because they were noble birth!
