Irrespective of the witch's prophecies, Macbeth,  from the very beginning, is betrayed by the incantations of the three weird sisters, as was Christ betrayed by Judas Iscariot, in the garden of Gethsemane.

Judas told the Sanhedrin, that he would welcome Christ with a kiss on the cheek and the words "HAIL master", therefore betraying Christ to the Roman soldiers.

The three witches do the same to Mabeth, "HAIL Macbeth, HAIL to thee Thane of Glamis!" and so on. Religious connotation in this play is legion.

When Macbeth and Banquo meet the witches, the witches greet Macbeth as Thane of Glamis (which is his actual title) Thane of Cawdor (which amazes him as the Thane of Cawdor is alive and well) and future King. For Banquo they predict that he will be the father of kings, though not a king himself.

Later that day Macbeth is made Thane of Cawdor, as the previous one has been executed. This makes him start thinking about being King too.

I think you'll like Macbeth when you know it better - it's a good idea to see a film version and get to know it that way. Meanwhile, this summary might help.
