I believe it could have been avoided, but I also think that the U.S. wanted to put an end to the Japanese involvement in the war and possibly the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, (D Day), may have played a role in their decision to go ahead and drop the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August of 1945. I believe the US wanted to send a clear message to Japan.
The scientists that invented the A-Bomb were not sure if the atoms would keep splitting and splitting, thus, possibly destroying the world.
Now that's something to think about, isn't it.

I suppose it could have, but it put an end to the war saving thousands of American lives. It was not an easy decision to drop those bombs.  It did send a very clear message, as tamarind said, to Japan and the rest of the world.  I'm not sure that the gruesome consequences were clearly understood, but Truman the decision to bring the war to an end while saving as many lives as we could.
