Any Advice On Getting A Tattoo For The First Time?

I want to get a tattoo first thing after christmas, a small tiny heart on my ankle (so it can be covered up or shown)..I have a place in mind to get it done, somewhere both my brother and uncle get theirs done so I know its safe. Can anyone give me some advice about the pain as ive heard many different things (ie it hurts, it doesnt hurt, it hurts at first etc) and about the price range for a small, colour tattoo? Also, any sites that have some nice heart tattoos?

You can design your own. Keep in mind that color does fade and the more detail you have in it, the harder it is to see as years go by. If you get one, put it in a place where age wrinkles (or fat) will distort it. Ankles have a tendency to wrinkle through age. If you want to cover it up (like I have) place it on the back of your shoulder low enough to wear straps, or on the upper part of your body somewhere. Gravity pulls!

Oh dear, you are a brave young lady.  My grandmother used to tell me that the fisherman in her village would drink whiskey from the flask until they could barely stand before they would have their tattoos done, and they made no bones of fish about trying to be brave.  But that was a long time ago, and the methods quite different, I suppose.

I can say that my granddaughter has told me it is not all so bad as that, now with a tattoo on her lower back, and she told me there was a bit of stinging along with it for a time, but that wasn't too much.  I will wish you all the best dear, and I hope you can find a trusty person to do the work for you.

Different tattooists, different prices. Shop around. There are a lot of chumps out there, so ask to see n album. ANY GOOD tattooist will have a picture album with pics of the stuff that they've done... Don't just go to the guy down the road cuz he's a little cheaper, and close. Look around. Word of mouth, ask around. As far as the pain, the ankle hurts a little more- but it's not unbearable. Relax is the best way to ease the pain. It's kinda like a burn, it just burns a little, that's all. Some guys will put a topic numbing agent on the area, before they work, I never got that, but I got mine like when I was 17, and I'm 40 now..... Make sure that you follow all of the aftercare directions, cuz that will make the difference between a tattoo looking good , or looking  'fuzzy'. Good luck, you'll be ok.

Thanks a lot, I'm really only worried about the pain! I'm planning to have a talk with the tattooist a few months before I get it done though just to get the right design and make sure I don't regret it.

Make sure you eat before you go. Most people that feel faint haven't eaten. As far as pain goes, it depends on where you get it, how big it is, etc. Ankles tend to be sensitive, whereas the back not so much. (Right on your spine will be tender though, and the closer you get to your sides the more it hurts) I remember thinking when I was done I wish I had gotten it slightly bigger because it wasn't painful to me.
