Any physical activity is good for losing weight, swimming is good for that. So is dancing. Walking is also good for you, about 30 minutes a day, for about 5 days a week to start, and make sure it is not on just flat ground, because that is too repetative. Hopet his helps, and best of luck to you.

Swimming is a fantastic exercise for weight loss as it uses a huge amount of the muscels in your body and is much lower impact than many other exercises.
I wouldn't say that swimming technically build muscle mass but it is fantastic for toning it and making it much harder/stronger.

As a pleasurable time: Here, dont expect to lose a lot of weight but you will definitely lose inches.. And the fat is replaced with muscles and so you wont find too much of a weight loss
As a serious workout - in which case you burn a lot of fat and also lose inches - for this, the metabolism should go high (you can calculate the heart rate needed for you to start burning fat by using the formula (220-your age)*0.8)
Which ever way you follow, its extremely important you dont eat fatty foods post-swim, how-so-ever hungry you may feel!
And one more thing, due to the water temperature, the metabolism returns to normal as soon as you are out of the pool (unlike land exercising) and hence many people feel swimming will not help in losing weight! But thats not true... Have a great swim
