What Was The Underground Railroad?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

It was prior to the American Civil War that many slave rebellions had already started taking place and the elevating conflict between the Northern and Southern states did nothing to solve problems for the Union.  Amongst all this chaotic mayhem, there was an organization who was established by abolitionists.  It was called the Underground Railroad.  This organization was totally against slavery and helped many slaves escape and gain freedom.  They did this with the help of their members or conductors, who helped these escaped slaves settle in their homes for safety.

Not only that but also they provided their support in enabling them to move to the North so their Southern owners would not be able to find them.  Once a slave escaped, it seldom happened that he returned back to the South in the fear of being caught and enslaved again by his previous owner or any of the other Southern slave owners.  Nevertheless there were some exceptions like Harriet Tubman and Arnold Cragston who returned back to the South to help other slaves escape.

This was a very good example about peaceful resistance. However, in WWII the French used THE UNDERGROUND for strike backs and info exchange and, also, smuggling allies safely to another country. Now, we have Underground Political Groups everywhere!
