My Dog Was Groomed, And Now Is Coughing, Shivering, And Acting Unwell. Any Thoughts As To What The Groomer Could Have Done To Cause This?

My Shih Tzu (age 10) was groomed on Wednesday. Afterwards, he acted odd. He would cough, and then start shivering. We thought it was just discomfort and stress from having his anal glands drained, ear hair yanked, etc. He wouldn't eat anything. He was better on Thursday and ate normally. Today he started acting strange again. He's lethargic and shivery again. Occasionally he coughs, which seems to scare him. His ear looks inflamed as well. Could inhaling water during a bath cause pneumonia? It's too late to get him to a vet now, so looking for advice.

Many things could have happened at the groomers unfortunately, depending on the quality of business you took him to. He could have caught something from or gotten nipped by another dog. It can be an intimidating experience depending on the size of surrounding dogs, though in my experience, small dogs do pretty well. I would definitely call a vet for advice regarding his symptoms.

Grooming does not create such problem but i think while grooming, water temperature was not set right. Have you checked up its body temperature? Whatever is its condition, it's never too late. You should immediately take it to vet. Sometimes the disease 'Eclampsia' shows such symptoms. There are chances that it has got deficiency in calcium in its body. Try to give it light but high quality food whenever he is ready to eat. I suggest you a homeopathic medicine Aconite that is helpful in all type of emotional traumas, inflammations and feverish conditions. But take it to vet for immediate check up soon.

Thanks to both of you! We wondered if perhaps he was bathed, and then stuck in a cage and dried later. He just seems to have the chills. And when he snorts/coughs, he seems to panic and get very scared. He didn't eat or drink anything last night, but seems to be a bit better today and ate some scrambled eggs. We'll just continue to keep an eye on him and get him into the vet Monday. It's too bad everything is closed on the weekends.
