How Do I Go About Submitting My Novel To A Publisher?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are a number of ways to go about submitting your novel to a publisher. You might want to consider getting an agent, who will do the legwork of submitting your work for you. Many agents work on a commission basis. That is, they earn a percentage of the royalties once they successfully match your work with a publisher. Some people think that publishers are more likely to be receptive to work submitted by agents, but that is by no means always true. Many publishers recognize that they would be missing out on a lot of good work if they only used agents. Therefore, if you don't have an agent, don't worry.

Do some research to find out which publishers will review work directly from writers. Also find out their submission guidelines and try to follow these to the letter. If you play the game right, you are more likely to find a home for your manuscript with the publisher. Usually publishers want to see one or two chapters of manuscripts initially.
