Malmesbury is the town located in the county of Wiltshire. It is a town in south Cotswold in the district of North Wiltshire in southwest England. The town is surrounded by rivers on three sides. The closest towns to Malmesbury are Cirencester, Chippenham and Swindon. Malmesbury claims to be the oldest borough in England. However, that is a debatable issue as Barnstaple has also made a similar claim. Both Malmesbury and Barnstaple were given the status of royal boroughs in the year 880 AD.

It is surrounded to the east by the Bristol Avon, which flows westwards from Sherston.
