What Does Constitution Arch Signify?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Constitution Arch was built to signify the victories of British soldiers in the wars with Napoleon. It is also known as Wellington Arch to commemorate the role played by the Duke of Wellington in the British victories, and is located in a corner of Hyde Park. The Constitution arch was planned by George IV in 1825 and was built in the period 1826-1830. It was designed by Decimus Burton. However most of the ornamentation and decorations that were thought of originally, could not be done because much money was spent on refurbishing the Buckingham Palace which was in progress during the same time frame.

The arch originally was slightly away from its present location. In 1883, the arch was moved to its current location which is in the centre of a large traffic island.
The arch is hollow from inside. It has been under the ownership of English Heritage since 1999. Now the public can freely visit the arch and see all three floors of exhibits which show the details of the history of the arch.
