Sitting Bull was born on Grand River, a few miles west of Mobridge, in South Dakota in March 1831. His father was a prominent member of the Sioux nation, of the band of Unkpapa. Sitting Bull is said to have been distinguished for courage and intelligence from an early age.
He became chief of the Unkpapa in 1866, resisted attempts by white Americans to take the gold that was found in his native Black Hills in the northern plains, and famously defeated General Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. Later in life he travelled extensively, including to Europe, as part of Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West show. He also befriended legendary American heroes such as Annie Oakley.
In 1890 Chief Sitting Bull was arrested by Native American police working for the US government. He resisted arrest and was shot dead.
