Some games are free to download and play, such as games you can play in your internet browser. These games are built in Flash or shockwave and download directly in a minute or so before you play them. Many Flash games are recreations of old arcade classics such as Pac Man and Space Invaders. These are 100% free and 100% legal.

Open Source (truly free) game development has not taken hold in the developer community due to time and skills involved in making a world class game. However free games such as Hattrick (hattrick.org are popular and some older games such as Doom and Quake have been made open source.

If you are after a game but do not want to get caught up in any illegal, it is always best to visit a website which shares files of games under a legitimate license with the software developers. This allows you to download the real thing and reduce the likelihood of viruses being present within the download.
To fully protect yourself however you should always make sure that your PC is protected with anti virus software and to use it to prevent file corruptions, which are typically encountered during file downloads
