For many people, this sort of diet sounds like a dream but following such a diet would only lead to gaining weight and putting yourself at risk of diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and gall stones.
However, there is one group of people who are forced to eat a massive calorie intake each day to keep up their weight. People with cystic fibrosis produce a thick sticky mucous which affects their lungs. This is a well known symptom of this genetic disease. What is not so well known is that the mucous also affects their gut and makes them unable to digest fat.
They suffer repeated infections and often lose weight, usually weighing less than they should for their height. In order to keep their weight up and be able to fend off further infections, some doctors recommend that CF adults each about 5000 calories per day. The only way to do this is to eat very high fat foods, meals such as fried breakfasts, lots of chips, high fat drinks like milk shakes and loads of chocolate.
In reality, being forced to eat like this causes problems; many CF sufferers hate their regime and long to eat a salad.
