After becoming the President in 1801, Thomas Jefferson's main achievement in relation to foreign affairs was that he continued the Jay Treaty, also known as Treaty of London, and kept the Federalist minister in London to continue negotiations on debts and boundaries, which were mostly successful. The treaty encouraged trade between the two nations for a decade, but it broke down after 1803.

The Louisiana purchase was another important moment in the presidency of Thomas Jefferson when he became president in 1801. Louisiana was finally purchased by US in 1803.
