    Appallingly poor leadership on both sides, with a total willingness to throw men into suicidal situations with no thought for the consequences. One general expressed his strategy as follows: If we have 6 million men and the Germans have 5 million men, and losses in the trenches continue until each side has lost more than 4 million men, then we shall win.
