There are four basic forces in the Universe. You are probably already aware of Gravity and Magnetism. There are two others called the Strong Nuclear Force, and the Weak Nuclear Force. Both of these forces work only within an atom, and they have the effect of balancing against the magnetic and gravitational forces which pull the electron towards the protons.
