What Is Hydroponics?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Hydroponics involves growing plants in water enriched with important nutrients instead of soil. The name is derived from the Greek words for water and working. Soil provides the nutrients a plant needs as a result of the constant breaking down of organic material into nutrient salts. This is the process being instigated when you put manure on your vegetable patch. Gardeners also add these nutrients directly in the form of liquid feeds and fertilizer pellets. The salts dissolve in water in the soil and then the network of tiny plant roots can absorb the nutrients. Hydroponics is a highly artificial environment which enables the grower to regulate this process and create the ideal nutrient mix for the crop in question. It is a technique used worldwide but has one particular advantage in hotter countries because it reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation and therefore reduces the need for expensive and potentially environmentally damaging irrigation.

Hydroponics is the method of growing or cultivating plants in the absence of soil. This involves the growing of plants in artificial conditions, usually indoors with indoor lighting and placing their roots in either a static or flowing mineral solution. These nutrients are supplied to the plants roots directly after being dissolved in water. Nutrients that are dissolved and supplied in this way include magnesium, potassium, calcium, nitrate, sulphate and phosphate. All these nutrients are those that the plant would normally absorb from the soil. There are several other nutrients that are added in smaller quantities for instance Zinc, Boron, Nickel, Iron, Magnesium and Boron. Balanced solutions are widely available in the market growing techniques can be researched using the internet as well. As the weather of the planet is warming up and conditions become harder to cultivate plants in external environments, hydroponics is seen as the next big thing in feeding the world's billions.
