    When talking about wood, the term ripping is a transitive verb which is used to mean splitting or sawing (wood, for instance) along the grain. In this sense of the term it is used to mean dividing a piece of wood lengthwise.

    A related term is a coarse-toothed saw. That is, a saw which has coarse teeth that is used to cut the length of the grain of wood. It is also called a splitsaw.

    The term ripping is also an inflected form of the verb rip In general, the term ripping is also used as an adjective to mean excellent or marvellous. As an adjective it may also mean resembling a sound of vicious tearing which is as of something being ripped apart or as of lightning splitting a tree.
