The best laptop case for you all depends on your personal preference. A shoulder style is more like a briefcase, and perhaps a bit more formal. The backpack style is similar to the bags that are popular at universities. If you are going to put a lot of equipment in your laptop case, you might prefer the backpack style because the weight may be a bit easier to carry. On the other hand, the shoulder or briefcase style allows you to keep an eye on your laptop and prevent it from being bumped.

When carrying a laptop, to prevent strain on your back you should distribute the weight on both sides of your body if possible. If you have a lot to carry, you should try to have about equal weight on both arms for balance. Of course this is not always possible or convenient. When travelling in public, it's best not appear too preoccupied with what you are carrying for personal security. Having at least one arm free is good self defence.
