Crate training is a method where a dog is trained to stay inside a crate for a stipulated time. This is done for various purposes like limiting its access, stopping it from chewing and eliminating anything in its path and to move it from one place to another for long distances while travelling. There are several types of crates ranging from plastic to collapsible metal pens.
Though there is no fixed time for crating a dog it is not advisable to leave them in a crate for a long period of time. Though crating has its own advantages it is not a magical solution and comes with its own set of problems. It may create restlessness and can create problems in their elimination process. It may create anxiety and stress in them. It may also have an adverse effect on their health and energy levels. Thus one has to train the dog to live in a crate and take it gradually for good results.

We have a new pup. He is a Pom and we Think about 12 weeks old. He is a rescue pup. We are trying to get him to sleep in a crate at night like we did our oldest pom but he is having nothing to do with it.
We put him in the crate with a chew bone, made sure he was very tired from playing and he started to banged the crate door with his paws and yelped. I went over and reassured him that everything was ok and this just made him more freaked out.
So we put him in our utility room in the crate by himself and he kept the banging and the yelping for an hour until I couldn't take it anymore. The longer it went on the louder and more aggressive he became.
When I got him out, he kept yelping. It took about 30 mins to calm him down and allow him to sleep in my sons room.
Anyone have any ideas why he would be acting this way? And is there anyway we can get him to relax in a crate?
