Canada entered the First World War when the then Governor General of Canada declared war on Germany. It was seen as a duty to fight on the side of the motherland, i.e. England. More or less it was seen as obligatory by the Canadians to fight on behalf of the British even though the French speaking population of Quebec resented this and opposed conscription openly. In terms of motivation the Canadians perhaps see themselves as allies of those that were on the right path, much like they do now. The difference now is that they are not fighting any longer to defeat an oppressive regime; that part is over, the Taliban has gone. Now it is a fight to keep Afghanistan from falling into the hands of the Taliban.
