Many people had different views to whether slavery should be allowed or not. The North believed that slavery should be banned from all states and the South needed slavery to produce all their resources. When Lincoln became president, the South was enraged because they knew Lincoln was against slavery and might have the possibility of banning it. Being seceded from the states, they could carry on slavery however long they felt like it, because once secession wasn't a problem anymore, they could make their own laws. So, the South felt that seceding was the only way to keep slavery going in their territory.
