The Stone of Destiny or Lia Fail is the stone reputed to be the original stone on which the Kings of Scotland were crowned. It is said to have been brought from Ireland by the Dal Riata Gaels.
It has also been called Joseph's Pillow Stone.
The stone has been the focus of much rivalry and dispute between England and Scotland
The English under Edward I removed the stone, transported it to Westminster Abbey where it was fitted to an old wooden chair known as St. Edwards Chair on which English monarchs were crowned.
Legend has it that monks at the abbey of Stone hid the original chair and kept it in safe keeping.
On Christmas day 1950 a group of Scottish students stole the stone, breaking it in the process.
