Gregory Peck was a Hollywood actor whose is known for depiction of men of dignity and integrity. He was born in 1916 in California. He started acting in motion pictures in 1944. Among his early pictures were The Keys of the Kingdom (1944), The Yearling (1946), and Gentleman's Agreement (1947). He also appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's thriller Spellbound (1945) and in courtroom drama The Paradine Case (1947).
In Twelve O'Clock High (1949) Peck played a strict US Air Force general. Peck costarred with Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday (1953), played a downed war pilot in The Purple Plain (1954), and Captain Ahab in MobyDick (1956), which was directed by John Huston. Peck played Caption Mallory in box office hit Guns of Navarone that was released in 1961. His performance in Mockingbird in which he played Atticus Finch, a small-town Southern courageous lawyer of flawless moral convictions, won him the 1962 Academy Award for best actor.
Peck continued to appear in motion pictures in subsequent years, although less frequently than before. In 1969, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. In 1989 Peck was given the AFI's Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1998 he appeared in television version of MobyDick. Peck died in 2003.
