The legendary DJ John Peel (1939-2004) whose name is synonymous with BBC Radio 1 is credited with playing a major part in popularizing several styles of music like alternative rock and pop as well as reggae and punk.
John Peel was born near Liverpool in Heswell on the Wirral Peninsula; his full name was John Robert Parker Ravenscroft. In his long and illustrious career Peel received several acclaims and awards and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1998 in recognition for his contribution to British music.
Peel has been noted for his musical taste and his style of broadcasting which won him as many fans as the musicians whose songs he played. Peel was voted as one of the 100 greatest Britons of all time in a poll conducted by the BBC in 2002; he was ranked 43rd in the list. His autobiography Margrave of the Marshes was published posthumously by Transworld in October 2005 with inputs from his wife Sheila and journalist Ryan Gilbey.
