This is a 'how long is a piece of string" kind of question.
You could, in theory, spend from nothing to tens of thousands of pounds. It all depends on what you want to do with your site, what kind of whistles and bells you want and whether you need your site to be e-commerce enabled in order to sell goods and services online and take credit card payments.
I suspect since you have posed the question that you don't know what kind of site you want. First off, sit down and decide what type of site you need, be it a 'brochure' site to promote your company online or an e-commerce site.
Next, spend a substantial amount of time looking at the sites of rival companies to see what they are doing. Surf widely and find other sites that you like. When you can narrow down the brief in this way, you can then discuss your requirements with a web developer to get a handle on the likely level of cost.
Remember, too, that there will be on-going cost involved in maintaining the site after it is launched.
