Before she married, Maria's name was Maria Augusta Kutschera. She was born in Vienna in 1905, orphaned, and raised by relatives as an atheist and socialist.
After she came of age, she entered the abbey as a novice.
She married Baron (sir) Georg von Trapp, and became "Maria von Trapp". The role was played by Julie Andrews in the American version of the story, called "The Sound of Music".
