The capital of New Zealand is called Wellington. It is located on the Southern coast of New Zealand's North island.
Originally settled by Polynesians in the 10th century, it was called by them 'Te Upoko o te Ika a Maui' which means 'the head of Maui's fish.'
When Europeans began to arrive in the area in the mid-nineteenth century, they named their settlement 'Wellington' in honour of Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, who had led Britain's armies in the Napoleonic wars and later went on to a distinguished political career.
Despite being the capital, Wellington is not the largest city in New Zealand. That title goes to Auckland, which, in the nineteenth century, served as New Zealand's capital for a period of 25 years. Today, the greater Wellington region is home to about 400,000 people, approximately 10% of New Zealand's overall population, while Auckland boasts a population of over a million.
