The biggest land animal in existence today is the elephant. To be a little more specific, it is actually the African Savannah elephant, which is the largest living land mammal. It is 13 feet (four metres) tall and weighs about 15,400 pounds, which approximately amounts to about 7,000 kilograms. The African Forest elephant is shorter (about three metres or 10 feet tall) and at 5,500-6,000 kilograms, weighs significantly less than its counterpart in the savannah.
The elephant is now an endangered species, and is dwindling due to the reckless poaching that goes on. Elephants are highly valued for their tusks, which are made up of ivory.

There are three varieties of elephants in the world, namely the African Savannah elephant, the African Forest elephant and the Asian elephant. The Asian elephant, which is also known as the Indian elephant, because it is predominantly found in India, is smaller in size than the two African varieties. The Sri Lankan variety of Asian elephants weighs about 12,000 pounds and is about 11 feet tall. Mainland Asian elephants weigh about 11,000 pounds but are as tall as the Sri Lankan variety and Sumatran Asian elephants are about three metres (10 feet) tall and weigh about 9,000 pounds.
