Who Were Gilbert And Sullivan?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

W.S. Gilbert was a Librettist and Arthur Sullivan was a composer. They collaborated to make a series of fourteen comic operas between 1871 and 1896 in Victorian England.

Richard D'Oyly Carte was the one who initially produced all their works. He was the third member of the partnership and the one who built Savoy Theater to present their operas in London. He later formed a company called D'Oyly Carte Opera Company which presented their operas until it closed down in 1982. The Savoy Operas have had long lasting international success, predominantly in English speaking nations. Operas like H.M.S Pinafore and The Mikado fashioned the music theater of the 20th Century. Gilbert's librettos were well known for their "topsy-turvy Dom". Sullivan was a classically trained singer who wrote hymns and oratorios for the opera. He made appealing melodies which could express both humor as well as pathos.
