Which Ancient Culture Worshipped The Scarlet Ibis?

The scarlet ibis which is the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago was venerated by ancient Egyptians and was an important part of their religious rituals. In fact the bird was mummified and placed along the Pharaohs in their tombs. They have been depicted in murals and more than 1. 5 million birds were found in the tombs.
The ancient Egyptians believed that Thoth, the God of knowledge and wisdom probably because he was credited with inventing writing and measuring time, also a scribe of the Gods came down to the earth in the form of the scarlet ibis. The scarlet ibis was so scared to the Egyptians that killing it either for religious purposes or not was punishable by death.
With the destruction of the home of the scarlet ibis which is much of the marshy lands areas and reclaiming of swampy areas by human beings the bird has become extinct in the land that worshipped it and venerated it dating back to hundreds of years!
