Every year for the past sixty years, the people of Norway have given a Christmas tree to Westminster as a gift of thanks for British support during World War II.
The ceremony is attended by the Norwegian Royal family and the Lord Mayor of Westminster. This year Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit lit the tree. There was singing from the Choir of St. Martin-in-the-Fields and the Norwegian boys choir, Boys of Silver.
The 70 ft Norwegian spruce is over sixty years old. It appears in Trafalgar Square and is decorated with over 500 tiny white lights. This is in keeping with the traditional Norwegian style of white, rather than coloured lights.
The tree will be lit from noon until midnight until the 6th of January. From 11 to 23 December there will be a carol service from 5 to 9 p.m.
