Who Was James Arness?

    James Arness was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 26, 1923. He is an American actor who is best known for his role on the long running television series known as 'Gunsmoke'. James Arness played the role of General Matt Dillion on 'Gunsmoke' and he held this same role for a record-breaking twenty years. He was in this role from 1955 until 1975.

    In addition to 'Gunsmoke', James Arness has also appeared in 'McClain's Law' which aired from 1981 until 1982 and in 'How the West Was Won' which aired from 1975 until 1979. Most of his life was spent working in television westerns.

    During World War II, James Arness also served in the United States Army. During the Battle of Anzio, he was injured in the legs very badly which caused him to have a permanent limp.

    Many people remember James Arness for his height. He stood approximately six foot and seven inches.
