The basis of this traditional breakfast is fried bacon and eggs, usually with a slice of fried bread. Added to this there may be a long list of ingredients, of which the most common are: tomatoes, mushrooms, sausages, fried potatoes and black pudding. Some people also like to add baked beans. Various ingredients may be substituted for the traditional ones (or, if you have a huge enough appetite, added to them: cold or warm ham, poached or scrambled eggs, omelette, fried onions and toast. A buffet in a large hotel may offer all these and more.
Alternatives to the "full English" include kippers with toast or bread and butter, plain poached eggs, kedgeree (a fish-based mixture originating in India) or porridge (originally from Scotland.) Nowadays the traditional breakfast is considered too heavy and time-consuming for most people; it is more often served as a Sunday morning treat or an evening meal.
