Are There Any Laws Regarding Catalytic Converter Replacement?

I have a 2004 Nissan sentra that the catalytic converter has been replaced twice on. The dealer replaced it once under warranty and once under factory recall. It is bad again, and a muffler shop stated that this part should be guaranteed for 80,000 miles, NJ law. True or false?

By original design, your vehicle was to have this device to collect/contain harmful exhaust components. Not to have it in place and in a working mode will not produce exhaust gases to meet the current regulations...the vehicle would be illegal to operate!

Most units have a circular removable section plug at it's bottom side.  The metal circle is about 4" in diameter. This plug can be removed to remove the "rattling stones" inside and replaced by new pieces that will absorb the offending gas components. These 'stones' can be purchased at an automotive parts store. The pieces will recondition the convertor back into air quality compliance at a small faction of the cost of a new unit and the labor necessary to install the same. Drive in a clean atmosphere.

The guarantee depends on what your dealer covers. If it went bad your motor is not running right. Is it stopped up. It should def. Last more than 4 years. I would take it back to the dealer and complain.
