Sorry mate, but you got one part of that very wrong. You imply that he renounced his activities. Renounce means "give up" on something.
Sadam Hussein never willingly gave up on being President of Iraq. In fact, he claimed that he was still the only legit. leader of his country, right to his moment of death.
Renounce can also man to "disown". But often in his defence Hussein didn't really deny that he'd had a part. What he argued was that the court had no right to judge whether he was justified in that part. He generally felt his actions and his part had been entirley justified and authorised.
He did sometimes deny that he hadn't played the part alleged; but that's often what people do, whether they are guilty or not. Denying guilt is not a valid defense in itself.
As for the rest,
The present Iraqi legislature declared that the Death Penalty would be imposed for certain crimes. And Hussein was found guilty of such a crime.
