Where Is The City Called Canterbury?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Canterbury is a city in Kent, in southeast England. It is the seat of the Primate of All England who is the head of the Church of England and the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Anglican Communion. It also has a cathedral by the same name.

The name Canterbury comes from Old English and means "fortress of the men of Kent". Pope Gregory the Great, in 596, sent Augustine to England to promote Christianity. Augustine's visit was the first papal mission and he built a priory. The present day cathedral stands on the site where this priory was built. The Abbey outside the city walls was also built by him.

Today, Canterbury is a major tourist centre and Canterbury Cathedral attracts more than a million visitors every year.
