Ramsgate, a seaside resort is located on the Isle of Thanet, East Kent. Kent is one of the counties in England. London lies to its north-west border and East Sussex, Surrey, Greater London and Essex skirt this county of Kent. Kent shares a small part of its border with France.
Early references show that it was known as Hraefn's ate (cliff gap) and during 1225 came to be known as 'Ramisgate' or 'Remmesgate'. Since 1357, it is called Ramesgate or Ramsgate. Ramsgate harbour was built in 1850 and was designed by John Shaw senior and John Shaw Junior. There is a Lifeboat station since 1802 and electric trams are operated here since 1901. According to 2001, Ramsgate has a population of 37,967.
Fishing and Tourism are the important industries here. The three architectural attractions at Ramsgate are St Laurence-in-Thanet in Thanet parish of St Lawrence, St Augustines at Westcliff of Ramsgate and the Parish Church of St George.
