    - Elections in October 1990.
    - Gained independence from Soviet Union on May 26, 1991.
    - Zviad Gamsakhurdia elected as first president.
    - The president was deposed in a bloody coup from dec 22,1991-Jan 6,1992.
    - Eduard Shevardnadze returned to Georgia in 1992 and joined the leaders of the coup
    - civil war from 1992-1995
    - More than 250,000 Georgians were ethnically killed in Abkhazia during 1992-1993.
    - economic crisis throughout the 90's.
    - Eduard Shevardnadze elected as President in 1995
    - Gets stable by late 1990.
