They wore hats to keep the sun and rain off their necks and faces.

They wore chaps to keep the thorn brushes from scratching their legs.

They wore boots to keep the snakes from biting them and to hold their spurs which were used to urge the horse to do their bidding.

They wore long sleeved shirts to protect their skin.

They wore denim jeans to protect their legs.

A cowboy is basically someone who traditionally tends cattle and other domestic livestock on ranches mainly in the continents of North and South America. The cowboy is generally an animal herder mainly the one to control cattle and horses, while a wrangler is someone who is principally in charge of horses. Some cowboys also take part in rodeos, and many of them work solely in a rodeo.

Most of the clothes that cowboys wear developed solely out of practical and functional requirements suiting the surroundings that one worked in. items usually worn by cowboys include the following:

A cowboy hat - having a wide brim to shield one from the sun, cowboy boots - having a high top for protection of the lower legs and pointed toes for easier access into the stirrup and chaps for protection of the rider's legs while riding on the horse.
