What is the reason for getting a National Insurance number in the UK?

It's so that you can pay your national insurance which contributes towards benefits if you ever have to claim them. The number lets the government identify you so that if your name changes or anything then they will still be able to find out how much you have paid over how many years you have paid. It also contributes towards a state pension i think.
