Tolerance means to bear pain or hardships with patience. It also means to bear things you do not like. For example, when you are very angry and want to hit some one, but do not do so, you are displaying tolerance. The greatest tolerance was practices by Holy Prophet (Peace be upon Him).
We learn from his life how much tolerance he practiced and showed great tolerance all through his life. He never gave trouble to anyone. He even prayed for his enemies and for those who troubled him. Hazrat Ayesha (May God be pleased with her) said that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) never took revenge upon any one. Abu Sufyan was the worst enemy of Islam before he became a Muslim. At the conquest of Makkah the Holy Prophet (PBUH) not only forgave him but also honoured him by declaring "amnesty" for those who took refuge in his house.
The people of Makkah boycotted the Holy Prophet (PBUH) socially for three years. When he went to Taif to preach Islam, the people there threw stones at him. God spoke to the Holy Prophet (PBUH) on this occasion of trial and said, "O, Muhammad (PBUH) speaks, if you so wish, I will destroy them."
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) replied, "O Gracious and Merciful God, show them the right path, for they don not know what they are doing. They do not recognize me. They do not know that I am Prophet of God. Make it known to them that I am their great well-wisher."
His enemies had a lot of wealth and weapons. When they fought with the Holy Prophet (PBUH), they were larger in number. He (PBUH) had only a few soldiers and a small quantity of weapons, but he showed great courage and patience because he had his trust in God. At one time, he was left all alone in the battlefield, but even then, he showed courage and patience. God gave him victory.
In his last address, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said, "Revenge for bloodshed, (as was the custom in the days of ignorance before Islam) is forbidden. I forgive those who murdered my cousin, Ibne-Rabiah", Hazrat Ans Bin Malik (May God be pleased with Him) said, "I served the Prophet of God for 10 years. By God, he never objected to anything I said or did." We should follow the noble example of the tolerance of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him).

Prophet Mohammad (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) was a role model for practising patience. At the time, when he started preaching Islam, the non-believers tried their level best to hurt Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) and cause him any sort of problems. However the greatness of the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) was such that at no point in time did he loose his patience. At the end of the day, he always preached people to submit them selves in the path of God.
He taught people to have good manners and be patient in the times of difficulty. A direct contrast to the people of today who at the times of difficulty loose their patience and commit sins that they themselves get ashamed of.
Many a times, it has been quoted in Quran (The holy book for Muslims) to be patient. With the almighty asking us to be patient in the face and from the mouth. Almighty has also mentioned the patience practiced by Prophet Mohammad (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) in chapter Al' Imran saying that Had the prophet been hard on his people, they would have scattered but Almighty blessed him with patience that kept the believers together.
We must all look upon the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) and follow his path of forgiveness and patience's to gain success in every walk of life.
