What Is The Minimum Legal Age To Get Married In Ireland?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

18, in general.  This is the age required of Irish residents, whether the marriage ceremony physically takes place in Ireland itself or outside. It's invalid under Irish law for people under 18, unless a Court Exemption Order has been obtained.

Normally proof of age is not required to register to get married or at the ceremony, but if asked for it must be produced.  If a person knowingly conducts a marriage ceremony in breach of the age requirements a fine of up to 635 euros may be levied on the ceremony conductor.

A Court Exemption Order may be obtained to allow a person under 18 to get married, if it can be demonstrated that the marriage is in the best interests of the intended bride/groom, and that there are otherwise good reasons for the marriage.  Applications for a Court Exemption Order must be made to the Circuit Family Court or the High Court with local jurisdiction.

It is not clear whether persons not ordinarily resident in Ireland could get married in a ceremony conducted within Ireland, under age 18, without a Court Exemption Order.  It should be possible to get specific advice about this situation when giving notification (3 months required) for intention to marry at the Registrar in the district where the marriage is supposed to take place.
