Which Two Events Devastated London In The 1660s?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The 1660 Restoration (the crowning of Charles II after the Republican interlude) was a joyful occasion, and followed by a promising flowering of art, culture and science. The theatres reopened, free speech flourished and the Royal Society was established for the advancement of science. It was all too good to last.
In 1664 the Bubonic Plague broke out. While much less damaging than the 14th-century Black Death pandemic, which killed at least a third of the population, it killed thousands in London and spread beyond it, though escape (for the rich, at least) was much easier than in the past. The Plague raged for two years, and people were still dealing with its effects when, in 1666, the "Great Fire" broke out all over London.
There were people who claimed that these events were God's judgment on the nation for its sinful ways and, even worse, seeking forbidden knowledge (i.e. the Royal Society!)
