My Dog Is Laying In A Hole She Dug Under A Bush And Is Shivering.... She Is Pregnant. How Soon To Expect Her To Whelp Because Of The Shivering?

We are expecting puppies any minute. The vet said she would deliver the first week in August and here we are. She has been laying in a hole under a bush since early this morning and I had to bribe her with a treat to get her out. She is shivering and I am wondering how long I can expect to wait till she whelps with these signs?

Typically the first stage of labor lasts 12 hours.  During this stage they pant, pace, vomit, try to nest, refuse food, and may shiver.  The next stage begins with the first fetus entering the birth canal and being delivered.
Signs of trouble include the mother undergoing 30 minutes of persistent, strong abdominal contractions, more than 24 hours after rectal temperature falls below 99 degrees Fahrenheit, more than 2 hours between delivery of offspring, or if the mother is in severe pain--vocalizing and licking her vulva.
If you have any doubts whether she is having a difficult birth have her examined by a veterinarian immediately.  Dystocia or difficult birth requiring medical intervention or a C-section is an emergency!
